Be it seasonal, occasional or chronic, depression is like a plague
that hits every one of us at some point in life. Everyone copes with it
in their own way, but oftentimes it’s hard to understand what exactly
you feel and why you feel like that. Feeling depressed for a few minutes
and hours is a healthy reaction to a hard situation or event. However,
when you let this feeling stay with you for longer, you risk losing
yourself and ruining your life. Even though you probably need to see
your doctor, these depression quotes may help you understand your true
and deep feelings to know how to get rid of this plague.
1. No reason
When you feel depressed for no reason, it’s worse than when you know
the reason. You don’t have any problems at work and at home. You have a
lovely husband and a charming child. You have money and you are overall a
successful woman, but you don’t feel happy.
Ned Vizzini’s quote probably relates to you: “So why am I depressed?
That’s the million-dollar question, baby, the Tootsie Roll question; not
even the owl knows the answer to that one. I don’t know either. All I
know is the chronology.”
2. Loneliness
Despite being surrounded by lots of people, many of us feel terribly
lonely. We try to run away from this feeling instead of handling it.
Perhaps, you are surrounded by wrong people that bring you down. You
feel emotionally isolated and overwhelmed. Next time you feel depressed
because of loneliness, sort out people you are surrounded with and make
sure you remove toxic people out of your life.
“When you’re surrounded by all these people, it can be lonelier than
when you’re by yourself. You can be in a huge crowd, but if you don’t
feel like you can trust anyone or talk to anybody, you feel like you’re
really alone,” said Fiona Apple.
3. Mood swings
“I’ll never forget how the depression and loneliness felt good and
bad at the same time. Still does.” It’s Henry Rollins’ quote that often
relates to me. One minute I feel the happiest person in the world and
the next minute I feel awfully sad. I feel happy because I’m alone, but
feel depressed because I’m lonely. It’s actually confused feeling.
4. Daytime nightmare
“I didn’t want to wake up. I was having a much better time asleep.
And that’s really sad. It was almost like a reverse nightmare, like when
you wake up from a nightmare you’re so relieved. I woke up into a
nightmare.” – Ned Vizzini
If you are prone to depression, this feeling probably sounds familiar
to you. Depressed and sad people have a tendency to sleep in but it’s
not the solution. Exercise is a better option.
5. Isolation
In Margaret Atwood’s novel, Cat’s Eye, I found these, at first
glance, weird lines: “I don’t want to see anyone. I lie in the bedroom
with the curtains drawn and nothingness washing over me like a sluggish
wave. Whatever is happening to me is my own fault. I have done something
wrong, something so huge I can’t even see it, something that’s drowning
me. I am inadequate and stupid, without worth. I might as well be
dead.”
This is a sign of low self-esteem. Isolation isn’t an option. It
leads to nowhere. Love yourself regardless of how many mistakes you made
and how many flaws you have. No one is perfect. You have only one
chance to live your life so why are you wasting it lying in the bedroom
with your curtains drawn?
6. Feeling sad and feeling depressed are two different feelings
People who have been trying to cope with depression for years know
that there’s a huge difference between feeling sad and feeling
depressed. Perhaps J.K. Rowling knows this difference because these
words sound convincingly:
“Depression is the most unpleasant thing I have ever experienced… It
is that absence of being able to envisage that you will ever be cheerful
again. The absence of hope. That very deadened feeling, which is so
very different from feeling sad. Sad hurts but it’s a healthy feeling.
It is a necessary thing to feel. Depression is very different.”
7. Serious disease
Chronic depression isn’t just bad feeling. It’s a sign that you need a
professional help. If you see someone feeling depressed all the time,
don’t ignore them. It’s crucial that people start treating depression as
a serious disease and consult doctor when they can’t find the way out.
Barbara Kingsolver said it better than me, “There is no point
treating a depressed person as though she were just feeling sad, saying,
‘There now, hang on, you’ll get over it.’ Sadness is more or less like a
head cold- with patience, it passes. Depression is like cancer.”
8. A cage without a key
As Elizabeth Wurtzel profoundly said, “That’s the thing about
depression: A human being can survive almost anything, as long as she
sees the end in sight. But depression is so insidious, and it compounds
daily, that it’s impossible to ever see the end. The fog is like a cage
without a key.” The only thing I can add is to stay strong and don’t
feel ashamed to seek help… Like she said we are strong enough to survive
anything, depression is no exception.
9. There’s always hope
Unfortunately, most depressed people refuse to ask for help. Whether
they don’t recognize their problem or they wish to get rid of it, they
believe telling someone about their feelings is a shame. It’s not,
actually. Many celebrities and ordinary people consult doctors when they
feel depressed and they don’t feel ashamed. It’s life.
Hopefully, Howie Mandel’s quote will inspire you to ask for help:
“There isn’t anybody out there who doesn’t have a mental health issue,
whether it’s depression, anxiety, or how to cope with relationships.
Having OCD is not an embarrassment anymore – for me. Just know that
there is help and your life could be better if you go out and seek the
help.”
Depression is a harsh feeling. When you recognize all the symptoms
and ask for help at once, though, you can feel better in a matter of a
week. Love yourself. Don’t let anyone hurt you. Surround yourself with
positive people. Do what makes you happy. And nourish your positive
attitude on a daily basis. These are tiny pieces of advice I can give
you. What’s depression quote describes your feelings best?
